Very Rare - Rock-Ola War Eagle 5c! Almost everyone is familiar with the famed Mills Novelty War Eagle slot machine made during the 1930s. The War Eagle design revolutionized the exterior styling of slot machines for the coming decade. What many people do not know is, there was a company for a short period of time in the 1930s that knocked off the design and made their own - the Rockola Manufacturing Co.
At first glance this may appear to be beautifully restored standard War Eagle - but it is not. As mentioned above, the Rockola Manufacturing Co, famed for their jukeboxes, made their own revamp kit for older Mills slot machines. Their War Eagles feature a larger lower casting, actually enhancing and enlarging the eagle! The birds feathers on the bottom actually extend much higher than the common Mills example.
The oak cabinet, mechanism, back door, etc are all Mills but the lower front casting is authentic and original Rockola. Today the Mills War Eagle outnumbers the Rockola version easily 500 to 1 and possibly higher. If Rock-Ola just made the lower casting - what did they use for the rest of the machine? During the early 1930's many operators realized the front mint vending slot machines were a thing of the past (FOK). They would remove the lower front casting, the mint vending casting and associated mechanical parts. They also modified the oak cabinet. Once all that was disposed of the visually impressive big War Eagle lower casting was installed, making it a War Eagle - Wa-lah! If you look at the last photo in the gallery you will see a Mills FOK Peacock we restored. The top casting is identical.
The machine is full of little details that once you know, show just how Rock-Ola transformed a FOK machine into this. This machine has received a full restoration by Nations Attic in January 2018. The castings were properly polished and painted by hand.
The original oak cabinet was disassembled and refinished. The internal mechanism was given a full tune-up and testing. New glass, award card and reel strips were installed. The only flaw this machine has is the back bonnet.
It does have a couple of cracks and the inside back edge has a chip out of it which is covered when the door is in place. We wanted to retain the original bonnet to preserve the originality of this rare machine. Original back door, new replacement lock on it. Original cash box is inside and all parts on the mechanism are original. This type of War Eagle is documented in a couple great books of antique slot machines - but rarely seen.
This example is new to the collecting field and it's restoration is less than a month old. This magnificent piece of gambling history is ready to be enjoyed and will impressive everyone who see and plays it. We know how to get them to you safely.
